The Many uses of a Cucumber

Cucumbers…to think that for all these years we’ve only been popping them in salads..

1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.

4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give
off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a
Few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!

6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!!

7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers
have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don’t have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks
great but also repels water.

9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!

10.Stressed out and don’t have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber will react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.

11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don’t have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemicals will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.

12. Looking for a ‘green’ way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the
shine, but is won’t leave streaks and won’t harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

How crazy is that? 13 different uses! It’s a shame I don’t like the taste but hey, I can use it for other things now!

The Montagu @ Oxford Circus

For our one year anniversary last week Liam and I headed to The Montagu in Oxford Circus.

The lavish food is sourced from independent British farms and local award-winning suppliers. This means that while eating their beautifully presented and great tasting food, you can also feel very satisfied that you’ve helped many of our countries businesses. Winning!

As you walk through the revolving doors of this plush hotel, you are faced with a clean and modern, spacious setting and just to the left resides their impressive 4* restaurant.

Mood lighting to perfection, crystal chandeliers and a romantic ambience set the scene. Not to forget the live music – a pianist playing beautiful renditions of popular chart songs.

We went all in; as we were celebrating and all, with a 3 course meal and lots of wine.

Starter: Pea & Ham hock soup

Mains: Roast chicken with swede sauce & veg

Dessert: caramel ganache & popcorn ice cream

Quite possibly the best dessert I have ever had! (And that’s a big statement). I absolutely love caramel and the biscuit and popcorn ice cream complimented it perfectly.. I was so excited I almost forgot to take a picture!

All of our food tasted as good as it looked and the white wine went down a treat.

The real highlight for me was a front-row seat to observe the exhilarating, fast-paced life of a chef in the open plan kitchen!

The Montagu has menus for breakfast, lunch, traditional afternoon tea, dinner and weekend brunch. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone for a special occasion as its relatively priced for what you get and makes for a really enjoyable evening.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be taking up the weekend brunch offer soon too so watch this space!

Chicken and tomato stir fry

The following recipe is completely JuicePlus approved too 😊

Ingredients:

  • 2x chicken breasts
  • Seasoning
  • Peppers
  • Onions
  • Tomatoes
  • Basmati rice

Chop and season the chicken..

If you’re using fresh peppers and onions, chop them too (I used frozen)

Pop the veg and olive oil into a pan

Pop your rice in a separate pan to boil – I used Uncle bens 10 minute pouch but you could also get the microwaveable version too

Add the chicken..

Put 8-10 tomatoes into a blender with some salt and pepper and blend

Once the chicken looks white, add the home made purée ..

Leave to simmer for a further few minutes.

As the purée is quite runny, drain it from the contents and place into a separate jug..

Add the rice in with the chicken and veg then add the purée to find your desired consistency..

Pop into a bowl and eat!

#tastyin20:Stuffed Turkey Peppers

Ingredients for 3 people (or 2 nd make lunch for the next day!)

 – 1 pack of Turkey mince or slices

– 1 onion

– mozzarella or feta cheese (you choose)

– 1 can of chopped tomatoes

– 3 large peppers (colour of your choice)

– Tomato Purée

– Herbs

Chop the onions and throw them into a preheated pan with the turkey ..

In the meantime
Chop the peppers in half and carve out the middle.
Add the tinned tomatoes once the chicken starts to turn golden brown..

And some herbs..

Leave to simmer for 5 mins ..

Is the chicken fully cooked? Remember salmonella Is not your friend.

Check by taking a small piece out of the pan to try.

Stuff the peppers with the filling, and add the cheese on top

Pop them in the oven for a few minutes so the cheese melts and the peppers soften.

Voila !

No I’m not colorblind..I love these so much I’ve made them twice now, with different colour peppers.

For an added pazaaz, you can throw some basmati rice on the plate too if you wish.

The world is your pepper

Oh you Greedy Cow!

Isn’t it tough when you’re in a big group and everyone wants a different cuisine? I hate that. You can never decide where to go!

But fear not my fellow food junkies, I’m going to tell you about one of my favourite restaurants, so that you never have to worry again! (I’m nice like that).

Have you ever seen Mile End tube station on the central line? Pop outside and head opposite for the creative foodie genius that is Greedy Cow.

It’s a restaurant home to a delightful and experimental array of tasty treats. Here you will find nearly 10 different cuisines in one restaurant to play with, all for a reasonable price.
They have everything from Mexican to Japanese; and all strategically placed inside a big gourmet burger!
There’s Wagyu beef and chicken options, and for the adventurous souls in the blogosphere, there’s an ‘exotic burgers’ section too. You can indulge on a wild boar or smack your lips around the meat of a camel.
Not a fan of burgers? Theres a salad and mains section too, covering your typical Ceasar’s, classic steaks and there’s even a corn fed chicken dish.

In the unlikely event that you still have room for dessert, do yourself a favour and grab yourself a banoffee pie. Possibly one of the best I’ve ever tasted!
The food is delicious and the staff are wonderful, which is why this small place is so popular. If you head there on a weekend, it’s likely you’ll be waiting a while for a table. Don’t worry though it’ll be worth it.

5 metabolism boosting snacks

Oh snacking..I love to snack! Did you know that eating more can actually help you to lose weight?

The biggest mistake people make in what they eat is not necessarily their dinners, most of the time it’s what they eat in between to cure those hunger pangs!

Here’s 5 super filling, healthy, nutritious snacks to keep your metabolism working all day.

  Pita bread and hummus

Wholemeal pittas with hummus are a great snack when you’re feeling tired. You’ve got your slow releasing carbs and hummus which is a good source of fat. Switch your afternoon chocolate bar for this and you will feel so much better.

  Popcorn

Yes I said it right, popcorn is a healthy snack! Ok not the ones that you get in the paper bag in cinema filled with sugar and salt, but the ones that you can buy and microwave at home..ass some cinnamon for some added extra flavour

  Greek Yoghurt

Packs nearly twice as much protein as dairy products, and tastes lovely! You can add this in fruit

  Citrus fruits
Foods like oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes contain vitamin C that helps metabolize fat faster. You only need 60 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C a day to meet your body’s basic needs, but increasing your daily intake to 500 mg can boost your fat-burning potential during exercise by 39%.

  Rice Cakes

For a very filling afternoon snack, spread some almond butter, a banana or some tuna and cucumber on one or two rices cakes to keep you full all the way up to dinner!

Hey Kuta, what’s with all the dead fish?

Kuta, Bali.

So on our first day in Bali, after the tropical downpour eased off, we headed to Kuta beach just down the road from our hotel.

To be truthful I was less than impressed. The trouble with travelling to many places with beautiful beaches is; your standards are heightened for what qualifies as a ‘great beach’ and your expectations are higher.

Kuta in my opinion, just ain’t gonna cut it.

The sand is quite nice; when you get a clear bit that isn’t filled with litter, plastic bottles or weird stuff you’d rather not step on.

The water is murky. Though that’s probably because the tide is strong. Because of the waves it’s a popular place to surf.

There is just something very mysterious going on at Kuta Beach..

On our walk across the beach we came across at least 25 dead fish on the shore.

Does anyone know why this is or the cause behind this? Is it simply that the tide brings them in and forgets to take them back out or is there something in the water poisoning all the fish?

I am baffled.

I’m also very nosey and inquisitive so I’d really like to know. What’s with all the dead fish?

On the plus side Kuta has some lovely restaurants. Our favourites were the Bamboo Garden Cafe, which is really cheap and serves gigantic portions.

And Kumatex which has a great lunch deal! A meal, an ice tea and an ice cream after for just 49000 rupiah (that’s £2.60!)
