5 reasons to love Green Tea

Green tea originated from China and has been used as a medicine for many years. Its been known to have multiple health benefits, and it’ll be rare to find a nutritionist that doesn’t swear by adding this detox tea to a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately approximately 80% of our population are still big black tea drinkers. Here’s 5 reasons to consider going Green..

  1. This brew helps combat diseases

Green tea is made from un-oxidized leaves and is one of the less processed types of tea. The antioxidants and beneficial polyphenols it contains help to cleanse our bodies.

These detoxifying substances protect cells and molecules which can reduce the formation of free radicals in the body. Free radicals are known to play a role in all sorts of diseases.

2. It zaps fat and increases energy

The polyphenol found in green tea enhances fat burning and boosts your metabolic rate, meaning that food and calories are broken down quicker. Additionally, in one study in 10 healthy men, green tea increased energy expenditure by 4%

Who doesn’t want to be more toned with more energy right?

3. It’s a cuppa that keeps you pretty

Green tea can apparently help with wrinkles and signs of aging!

Ever wondered why so many skincare products contain green tea extract? This is because their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities help inhibit free radicals from breaking down collagen, the protein in our skin that keeps us looking young.

Both animal and human studies have also demonstrated that green tea applied topically can reduce sun damage.

4. Its a beverage that could make you savvy

The key active ingredient is a small amount of natural caffeine, which is a known stimulant to improve brain function. Caffeine has been intensively studied before and consistently leads to improvements in various aspects of brain function, including improved mood, vigilance, reaction time and memory. Specifically, green tea drinkers showed increased connectivity in key parts of the brain associated with memory.

5. Going green can help with those pearly whites

teeth

  • Cavities – Green tea is anti-bacterial, it may help reduce bacteria and acid in the mouth.
  • Gums – Green tea’s anti-inflammatory substance can aid in controlling gum disease.
  • Tooth Loss – A study in the Journal of Periodontology showed that green tea may markedly reduce enamel loss.
  • Oral Cancer – Not only has green tea been linked to helping prevent breast and prostate cancer, but may slow the progression of oral cancer as well.
  • Smelly breath – Bacteria and other microbes make our breath smell, errr. Green tea’s anti-bacterial properties fight stinky bacteria too! Winning.

For me it’s a no brainer really. I choose to be healthy and youthful..pass me the Twinings.

Namaste

Through a startling realisation of how unflexible I am, I have recently decided to take up Yoga (amongst many other things) in my new found fitness regime.

I had my first class today at Another Space. Not your average yoga though, hot yoga. Basically it’s yoga but in 30 degree heat.

I’ve only had a few previous yoga sessions. However, this was years ago when I did a few classes of hot Bikram yoga at the studio in London Bridge.

Needless to say I was no expert, but my unflexible suspicions were confirmed when most of participants in the room could touch their toes bending over quite easily, and my hands barely passed my knees…

On the plus side I’m feeling very zen and ready to attack the rest of the day!

I also have a new personal challenge to be more at one with my body, getting much more flexible in the process. Fingers crossed.

P.s Do you like my new ellesse leggings?

I’m loving all the bold and colourful prints out right now! Time for a fitness shopping spree I think.

HIITin’ up Another Space

So last night I attended my first HIIT session at Another Space.
Since its launch party a few months back; where I was treated to a very intense spin session and a lovely array of healthy bites and super smoothies, I vowed to return quite frequently.

I’m sorry to say this hasn’t quite been the case. I confess that the fact that Covent Garden isn’t conveniently ‘on the way home’ for me has caused some lack of motivation. I’ve been doing a mix of home workouts and outside classes since returning from travelling but it appears I had started to form a bit of lazyitus.

Nonetheless I got that Friday feeling and decided to stop with the excuses and take on a well needed challenge of pushing myself to my limits. 15 days until I head to Cannes and Barcelona and counting I’ll have you know.

About The Space

Another space is simple, clean and minimalistic and has a calm vibe from the moment you walk in the door. They’ve sussed out just what one needs to find clarity and peace of mind before embarking on an intense training session.

There’s top notch equipment, exercise specific studios and changing rooms equipped with essentials that every girl dreams of. The only thing you need to bring here is yourself and a hairbrush. The rest is provided!

The HIIT Session

For those of you who aren’t familiar with HIIT, it involves intervals of high-intensity exercise followed by low intensity or complete rest. (To be honest in this particular session I would struggle to identify which one was supposed to be the low instensity part!)

Our lovely instructor, Jamie, is a Muay Thai professional. Yes Muay Thai, the combat sport that combines the use of 8 different parts of your body!

This brought flashbacks of my travels in Thailand. These fights were not something I particularly enjoyed watching, let alone doing. It was at this moment that it hit me that this wasn’t going to be your everyday HIIT session.

The hour was compiled of 3 ‘challenges’

Each challenge consisted of 2 different types of workout – Floor work and on the punch bags.

For those who struggle with maths, that’s 6 gruelling 8-10 minute routines with only 15 second rests in between. Fun right?

Throughout my 3 different floor sessions I endured push ups, burpees, jump squats, high knee kicks and mountain climbers. Think insanity, but with 8kg sandbags as weights instead of your own body weight.

During the section on the bags there were a mixture of jabs , punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes. All Muay Thai style for a true core work out.

Luckily enough the workout playlist was on point which made it somewhat more bearable as I’m a big fan of musical motivation.

Was it hard? Most definitely. Probably one of the hardest HIIT classes I’ve ever been to. Probably also the best to date too and one that I would definitely recommend!

There were 2 or 3 points near the end where I felt like sitting down and having a rest but Mohammed Ali told me not to.

“When you feel like you’ve got nothing left to give, and you give that little bit more, that’s when the magic happens.”

True Say Mo.

Before
After

By the end of the class I have to say that stepping out of the room and into the light was probably not my finest hour, but if sweat is fat crying then I caused an emotional breakdown.
Was it worth it? Of course it was. I feel energised, refreshed and like I can conquer the world. Even though Im currently walking sideways up or down the stairs. No pain no gain right?

Happy Saturday everyone!

5 metabolism boosting snacks

Oh snacking..I love to snack! Did you know that eating more can actually help you to lose weight?

The biggest mistake people make in what they eat is not necessarily their dinners, most of the time it’s what they eat in between to cure those hunger pangs!

Here’s 5 super filling, healthy, nutritious snacks to keep your metabolism working all day.

  Pita bread and hummus

Wholemeal pittas with hummus are a great snack when you’re feeling tired. You’ve got your slow releasing carbs and hummus which is a good source of fat. Switch your afternoon chocolate bar for this and you will feel so much better.

  Popcorn

Yes I said it right, popcorn is a healthy snack! Ok not the ones that you get in the paper bag in cinema filled with sugar and salt, but the ones that you can buy and microwave at home..ass some cinnamon for some added extra flavour

  Greek Yoghurt

Packs nearly twice as much protein as dairy products, and tastes lovely! You can add this in fruit

  Citrus fruits
Foods like oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes contain vitamin C that helps metabolize fat faster. You only need 60 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C a day to meet your body’s basic needs, but increasing your daily intake to 500 mg can boost your fat-burning potential during exercise by 39%.

  Rice Cakes

For a very filling afternoon snack, spread some almond butter, a banana or some tuna and cucumber on one or two rices cakes to keep you full all the way up to dinner!

Juice Plus+ is whole food based nutrition, including juice powder concentrates from 30 different fruits, vegetables and grains. JuicePlus+ Shakes

All the products are made from quality ingredients, carefully monitored from farm to capsule and shake to provide natural nutrients your body needs to be at its best.

Why do I need JUICE PLUS+?

Everyone wants to eat right and maintain a healthier lifestyle right? Whether you’re a busy mum hustling to feed on-the-go children, a business traveller trying to stay fit, or an active boomer keeping up with grandkids. Unfortunately, maintaining a balanced nutritional diet is often a challenge. In simplest terms, healthy eating is about getting back to basics − by following the latest USDA guidelines.

The best way to reduce your risk of disease is to eat healthy. The right fuel in your body makes it run better. Fruits and vegetables are two key food groups known to contribute to better health. Juice Plus+ puts more of the valuable nutrition from fruits and vegetables back into your diet to improve health and wellness.

The current recommendation for a healthy diet is to fill half your plate at each meal with fruits and vegetables, but how many of us actually do that on a daily basis?

Fruit, Veg and Berry Capsules

Healthy eating takes time, planning, and can cost a lot of money, which is why most people opt for easier and unhealthy processed food options. As a result, most of us suffer from a daily fruit and vegetable consumption gap. Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, Juice Plus+ products can help you fill that hole in your diet. There are even chewable vitamins available for children!

I’ve always wondered what that actually meant. Sounds a bit strange doesnt it?

It’s not until I have gotten older and cared more about what I look and feel like that I finally understand what this phrase means!

Your body, emotions, health, fitness and appearance are literally a bi-product of what you eat.

Eat crap = feel crap. Simple

Joining the Revolution

Ok so everyone goes on about how you have to travel, it’s the best thing you’ll ever do etc. And of course now I’ve done it I totally agree! Travelling makes you richer in mind and spirit, BUT I’m writing this post to tell you what else it makes you..
Travelling makes you FAT.

That’s right, this whole ‘oh you’ll get so skinny travelling’ ‘you’ll sweat out all the fat’ ‘you’ll do lots of walking’ bla bla bla. All lies.
So here are my reasons to back up my extra stone of weight I’ve put on in the last 4 months.

1.Beer is cheaper than water in most of Asia.

With beers at 50 cents in many a places and the lower calorie vodka and tonic option clocking in around $4 a piece, it’s a no brainer which one you’ll choose.

Drunk = 4 vodkas = $16

Drunk = 8 beers = $4

Hmm..

2. You eat street food at least 5 times a day

Were here to blend in and live like a local right? Part of that is experimenting the cuisine, and street food is the best way to do it. Dishes are 3x cheaper than restaurants but they’re also smaller and make you want to eat more often. Everything is also fried and 8/10 of them include rice or noodles. I can’t imagine any of that benefiting your waistline.

3. Exercise smexercise

Get used to it, the main sport you’ll be playing is beer pong.

Not everyone is nuts like me and wants to trek 10km for no reason, especially when you’re hungover.

Tuk Tuk journeys are $2 or less, making the lazier option a lot more popular.

So enough talking, what’s all this joining the revolution about?

In a bid to get sexy I’ve joined juice plus! So over the next few weeks expect posts of me and my shakes and lots of healthy recipes to follow.

If you want to know more info about this healthy living formula (it’s not a fad diet!) And join me in my bid to #getsexy, email me at laurenkateodonoghue@gmail.com for a lowdown of how it all works.

Its official, the New England football kit is here!

IMG_9970Last week at Wembley Stadium, American brand Nike unveiled the new home and away kits that our England stars will be donning for the Euros 2016.

The Press Launch included an array of activities on the night including a Q and A panel hosted by RinseFM. The panel, made up of England and Manchester City stars Steph Houghton (Team Captain), Toni Duggan (Winger/Forward), Joe Hart (Goalkeeper) and Physio Steve Kemp, covered the importance of on and off pitch training and heavily focused on the topics of nutrition and recovery.
‘Gone are the days where you get to the ground and have to do 60 laps on the pitch’ Tony answers, when asked if running is implemented in training. Instead, the whole panel confessed that Yoga is a popular activity amongst the players; a vital part of the recovery process that benefits both the body and mind.Yet your mats out everyone!
