HIITin’ up Another Space

So last night I attended my first HIIT session at Another Space.
Since its launch party a few months back; where I was treated to a very intense spin session and a lovely array of healthy bites and super smoothies, I vowed to return quite frequently.

I’m sorry to say this hasn’t quite been the case. I confess that the fact that Covent Garden isn’t conveniently ‘on the way home’ for me has caused some lack of motivation. I’ve been doing a mix of home workouts and outside classes since returning from travelling but it appears I had started to form a bit of lazyitus.

Nonetheless I got that Friday feeling and decided to stop with the excuses and take on a well needed challenge of pushing myself to my limits. 15 days until I head to Cannes and Barcelona and counting I’ll have you know.

About The Space

Another space is simple, clean and minimalistic and has a calm vibe from the moment you walk in the door. They’ve sussed out just what one needs to find clarity and peace of mind before embarking on an intense training session.

There’s top notch equipment, exercise specific studios and changing rooms equipped with essentials that every girl dreams of. The only thing you need to bring here is yourself and a hairbrush. The rest is provided!

The HIIT Session

For those of you who aren’t familiar with HIIT, it involves intervals of high-intensity exercise followed by low intensity or complete rest. (To be honest in this particular session I would struggle to identify which one was supposed to be the low instensity part!)

Our lovely instructor, Jamie, is a Muay Thai professional. Yes Muay Thai, the combat sport that combines the use of 8 different parts of your body!

This brought flashbacks of my travels in Thailand. These fights were not something I particularly enjoyed watching, let alone doing. It was at this moment that it hit me that this wasn’t going to be your everyday HIIT session.

The hour was compiled of 3 ‘challenges’

Each challenge consisted of 2 different types of workout – Floor work and on the punch bags.

For those who struggle with maths, that’s 6 gruelling 8-10 minute routines with only 15 second rests in between. Fun right?

Throughout my 3 different floor sessions I endured push ups, burpees, jump squats, high knee kicks and mountain climbers. Think insanity, but with 8kg sandbags as weights instead of your own body weight.

During the section on the bags there were a mixture of jabs , punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes. All Muay Thai style for a true core work out.

Luckily enough the workout playlist was on point which made it somewhat more bearable as I’m a big fan of musical motivation.

Was it hard? Most definitely. Probably one of the hardest HIIT classes I’ve ever been to. Probably also the best to date too and one that I would definitely recommend!

There were 2 or 3 points near the end where I felt like sitting down and having a rest but Mohammed Ali told me not to.

“When you feel like you’ve got nothing left to give, and you give that little bit more, that’s when the magic happens.”

True Say Mo.

Before
After

By the end of the class I have to say that stepping out of the room and into the light was probably not my finest hour, but if sweat is fat crying then I caused an emotional breakdown.
Was it worth it? Of course it was. I feel energised, refreshed and like I can conquer the world. Even though Im currently walking sideways up or down the stairs. No pain no gain right?

Happy Saturday everyone!

The lowdown on a Bohol day tour

We only had a day/night in Bohol and we had lots we wanted to see so a tour seemed like the best option for us.
Most tour shops close at 6pm so if you get to Tagbilaran late, you are limited with choice. Head to the Sealine travel shop in the shopping mall, East of rival park and they are open later. The travel shop is on the first floor, next to the big sports shop.

(You can also book your boat tickets to Cebu city next door like we did for the following day; kill two birds with one stone – winning!)

In the travel shop you can book on organised tours ranging from 1000-1500php per person.  This includes additional places like the Butterfly park, man made forests and zip lining. They also provide lunch for you.

The price of your tour is dependant on the number of passengers (the more of you there is the cheaper it gets).
In the end, we opted for hiring a private car for the day as it worked out cheaper, and we had the freedom to choose the places we wanted to go. Our driver also dropped us back to get our bags at the end of the day and straight to the pier to get the ferry back to Cebu, all for just 1500 PHP!
On our tour we visited the Tarsier Sanctuary and the Loboc river.

We also headed to the Loboc floating restaurant as recommended by our driver. We were actually unaware that this was a package lunch and river cruise. Unfortunately we ate just before we headed off so we weren’t hungry enough to take advantage of this.

It did however, look like the cruise wouldve been a lovely experience and it only costs 250 PHP per person for lunch. Please let me know how what it’s like if you go and experience this!

In the afternoon we headed to the Chocolate Hills which is furthest out. (All posts on these to come!)

Snorkelling in Malapascua

We met a lovely tour guide called Yugi on the boat over from Maya to Malapascua. He gave us lots of useful information about the island and suggested an afternoon of exploring under water.

SUNP0439

Myself, Liam and our two new German friends Max and Rebecca hired a private boat for the afternoon. We paid just 750 PHP per couple for a whole afternoon of snorkelling from 3-6pm. That works out under £6 each and our masks and snorkel hire was included!
We explored 3 different snorkelling spots and took a boat tour around the whole island.

SUNP0567First spot, South East of Bounty Beach.

SUNP0465SUNP0484
The water here was perfectly clear. You could actually see the sand at the bottom while sitting on the boat. As we swam around the area we see lots of lovely colourful fish and some great coral formations.

SUNP0471
SUNP0458

The second spot was around Daquitdaquit Island.

A small island of sharp rock that towered out of the water.

SUNP0447

Due to the waves crashing against it, the water wasn’t as clear as Bounty Beach. We did however see a Dori fish (the blue one in finding nemo that I don’t know the name of) and a couple of sea urchins that we swiftly avoided.
The third spot was my favourite: The WWII Japanese Shipwreck
This was so cool to see! Buried only about 5 metres beneath us was the remains of a Japanese WWII ship. Because of the low tide you can see this by just snorkelling.

Unfortunately the water was murky as it had rained the day before so it was a bit hard to see (especially in my pictures). That didn’t stop us though! Liam and I held our breath and swam down a few times to get a closer look. Lots of big fish emerged from under the ship, they’d obviously found a home under there.

SUNP0521
SUNP0518SUNP0505.JPGAfter our final underwater adventure, we climbed back on the boat and set sail around the whole island. Some of the views were beautiful. We see a Lighthouse and what appears to be the ruins of a church

SUNP0578

We stopped at the West of the island to watch the sunset over the hills. The water was so clear that as we rode through shallower waters we could see starfish on the corals.
It was such a lovely afternoon and a great way to see the really beauty of Malapascua.

SUNP0571I would recommend this trip to anyone, especially for less than £6 each.
If you need help with any tours or have questions, feel free to call Yugi on 00 69359969716. He helped us with tours, diving and accommodation! Just tell him Lauren and Liam from London gave you his number.

5 metabolism boosting snacks

Oh snacking..I love to snack! Did you know that eating more can actually help you to lose weight?

The biggest mistake people make in what they eat is not necessarily their dinners, most of the time it’s what they eat in between to cure those hunger pangs!

Here’s 5 super filling, healthy, nutritious snacks to keep your metabolism working all day.

  Pita bread and hummus

Wholemeal pittas with hummus are a great snack when you’re feeling tired. You’ve got your slow releasing carbs and hummus which is a good source of fat. Switch your afternoon chocolate bar for this and you will feel so much better.

  Popcorn

Yes I said it right, popcorn is a healthy snack! Ok not the ones that you get in the paper bag in cinema filled with sugar and salt, but the ones that you can buy and microwave at home..ass some cinnamon for some added extra flavour

  Greek Yoghurt

Packs nearly twice as much protein as dairy products, and tastes lovely! You can add this in fruit

  Citrus fruits
Foods like oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes contain vitamin C that helps metabolize fat faster. You only need 60 milligrams (mg) of vitamin C a day to meet your body’s basic needs, but increasing your daily intake to 500 mg can boost your fat-burning potential during exercise by 39%.

  Rice Cakes

For a very filling afternoon snack, spread some almond butter, a banana or some tuna and cucumber on one or two rices cakes to keep you full all the way up to dinner!

Hey Kuta, what’s with all the dead fish?

Kuta, Bali.

So on our first day in Bali, after the tropical downpour eased off, we headed to Kuta beach just down the road from our hotel.

To be truthful I was less than impressed. The trouble with travelling to many places with beautiful beaches is; your standards are heightened for what qualifies as a ‘great beach’ and your expectations are higher.

Kuta in my opinion, just ain’t gonna cut it.

The sand is quite nice; when you get a clear bit that isn’t filled with litter, plastic bottles or weird stuff you’d rather not step on.

The water is murky. Though that’s probably because the tide is strong. Because of the waves it’s a popular place to surf.

There is just something very mysterious going on at Kuta Beach..

On our walk across the beach we came across at least 25 dead fish on the shore.

Does anyone know why this is or the cause behind this? Is it simply that the tide brings them in and forgets to take them back out or is there something in the water poisoning all the fish?

I am baffled.

I’m also very nosey and inquisitive so I’d really like to know. What’s with all the dead fish?

On the plus side Kuta has some lovely restaurants. Our favourites were the Bamboo Garden Cafe, which is really cheap and serves gigantic portions.

And Kumatex which has a great lunch deal! A meal, an ice tea and an ice cream after for just 49000 rupiah (that’s £2.60!)

Affordable Fashion: Boky Lee Inspired

Stylish, artistic, clever. No unfortunately I’m not talking about myself. These are the words i’d use to define designer Boky Lees current ‘Mirage’ Collection.
This colourful jewellery range varies from brooch kits to high trend chokers.

Each scaffolding inspired creation allows its wearer to customise the design using the pipes and interchangeable connection parts.

Boky Lee gold Bracelet

You can add your own creative flare, using a combination of colours to compliment many different outfits making these pieces both stylish and rewearable.

One of my personal favourites, the mien choker kit is an iconic statement piece. One that can be paired perfectly with a stylish athletic, colour clash style or add some edge to a plunge cut LWD for spring.

This quirky range is at the forefront of this seasons colour pop theme and items start at £178.

Unfortunately for us common folk, those sorts of prices are just not feesible. I have therefore scoured the online fashion world to find some Boky Lee inspired cheaper alternatives. There is always a way to be fashionable without breaking the bank right?

Colour tattoo chokers from etsy.com

You can’t customise these, but at 99p per piece you can buy the whole collection for under £10!

Check out this cute multicolour choker from Claires for just £5

This blue necklace if a similar shape is on £7.99 from New Look

For the same look but more comfortable wear, grab yourself one of these satin chokers from ebay. They come in 25 different colours!

This fab block bracelet from Amazon will turn any simple outfit into a striking ensemble.

Affordable but on trend fashion, now that’s what we love!

Living with Arthur

Arthur can be very aggressive, when his angry he inflicts lots of pain
On lucky days I can avoid him
But eventually he torments again

At 19, Arthur forced me to cut off my hair
and he caused me unbelievable stress
He sometimes limits me from exercise too
so I struggle to look my best

He has made me feel tired and frustrated
heartbroken and very alone
He steals all of my energy and some days
its too much effort to even leave my home

I get support from my family and friends
but theyll never fully know
How it feels to live with someone you despise
but someone you cannot let go

Some days I wake up with new hope
And some days I wake up with none
Sometimes I know I’ll have a terrible day
before the day has even begun

I often try to set goals for myself
but Arthur gets in the way
Even the simplest of tasks are hard
when his there to ruin my day

I often wonder and think to myself
Why was it me he chose to be with?
Then I remember not to take pity on myself
As there are far worse lives I could live

Happy 5th Anniversary to us Arthur,
were finally learning to get along.
I’m stuck with you but at least I’m fighting back
You taught me that to succeed in life you must be strong.

An insight into chronic illness from yours truly

The best at Bottomless Brunchin’

For one of my many birthday celebrations, myself and a big group of lovely ladies headed to One Canada Square in Canary Wharf for a bottomless brunch.

Now I have been to many a brunches. The idea of being able to fit as much drink as you can into two hours is very appealing to me haha.

I’ve been to One Canada Square twice now and it’s definitely top of my list overall.

Here’s 5 reasons why I love it..

1. Your glass is never empty

Believe it or not, although many brunches deem themselves ‘bottomless’, this isn’t always the case. Some places will only serve you your drink while your eating (like at the South Place hotel).

At OCS you can have a Bloody Mary, mimosa, wine or prosecco and as soon as the glass is half full your waiter comes round and tops you up.

2. The food is amazing!

There’s a great selection of food over 3 courses and a 2 or 3 course option.

I had a leek and sweet potato rosti to start and a haddock fish cake in a beautiful spinach sauce for mains.

Ok i confess i also had a sticky toffee pudding to finish (covers eyes in shame).

Happy Easter everyone!

This year my birthday weekend just happens to fall over Easter. Yay me an extra 2 days to celebrate.

I usually have a whole week of celebrations, regardless of whether it’s a ‘special’ birthday or not. Any reason to go out and be social is good enough for me!

I also have 4 months of making up to do in England. So they’ll be a few new places I’ll be experimenting with as well as hitting up some of my favourite old ones.

I’m currently on my way to Bournemouth for a night with my besties.

Today’s outfit:

*Top: New Look *Coat: Prinark Waistcoat: Wearall *Jeans: Topshop *Shoes: Converse *Sunglasses: Rayban *

Don’t be deceived by the sun its still chilly! I’m taking my coat as a safe bet, it’s always much colder by the sea .

Tomorrow I have a bottomless brunch booked at One Canada Square in Canary Wharf and for bank holiday Sunday were back at one of the famous Essex hubs: Faces.

Keep your eyes peeled for a Bournemouth and brunch post :o)

What are your plans over this weekend?
