HIITin’ up Another Space

So last night I attended my first HIIT session at Another Space.
Since its launch party a few months back; where I was treated to a very intense spin session and a lovely array of healthy bites and super smoothies, I vowed to return quite frequently.

I’m sorry to say this hasn’t quite been the case. I confess that the fact that Covent Garden isn’t conveniently ‘on the way home’ for me has caused some lack of motivation. I’ve been doing a mix of home workouts and outside classes since returning from travelling but it appears I had started to form a bit of lazyitus.

Nonetheless I got that Friday feeling and decided to stop with the excuses and take on a well needed challenge of pushing myself to my limits. 15 days until I head to Cannes and Barcelona and counting I’ll have you know.

About The Space

Another space is simple, clean and minimalistic and has a calm vibe from the moment you walk in the door. They’ve sussed out just what one needs to find clarity and peace of mind before embarking on an intense training session.

There’s top notch equipment, exercise specific studios and changing rooms equipped with essentials that every girl dreams of. The only thing you need to bring here is yourself and a hairbrush. The rest is provided! 


The HIIT Session 

For those of you who aren’t familiar with HIIT, it involves intervals of high-intensity exercise followed by low intensity or complete rest. (To be honest in this particular session I would struggle to identify which one was supposed to be the low instensity part!)

Our lovely instructor, Jamie, is a Muay Thai professional. Yes Muay Thai, the combat sport that combines the use of 8 different parts of your body!

This brought flashbacks of my travels in Thailand. These fights were not something I particularly enjoyed watching, let alone doing. It was at this moment that it hit me that this wasn’t going to be your everyday HIIT session.

The hour was compiled of 3 ‘challenges’

Each challenge consisted of 2 different types of workout – Floor work and on the punch bags.

For those who struggle with maths, that’s 6 gruelling 8-10 minute routines with only 15 second rests in between. Fun right?

Throughout my 3 different floor sessions I endured push ups, burpees, jump squats, high knee kicks and mountain climbers. Think insanity, but with 8kg sandbags as weights instead of your own body weight.

During the section on the bags there were a mixture of jabs , punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes. All Muay Thai style for a true core work out.

Luckily enough the workout playlist was on point which made it somewhat more bearable as I’m a big fan of musical motivation.

Was it hard? Most definitely. Probably one of the hardest HIIT classes I’ve ever been to. Probably also the best to date too and one that I would definitely recommend! 

There were 2 or 3 points near the end where I felt like sitting down and having a rest but Mohammed Ali told me not to.

“When you feel like you’ve got nothing left to give, and you give that little bit more, that’s when the magic happens.”

By the end of the class I have to say that stepping out of the room and into the light was probably not my finest hour, but if sweat is fat crying then I caused an emotional breakdown. 
Was it worth it? Of course it was. I feel energised, refreshed and like I can conquer the world. Even though Im currently walking sideways up or down the stairs. No pain no gain right?
